You’ve taken daily steps toward supporting your dyslexic-neurodivergent child in their learning challenges. Along the way, your child has likely faced real hardship and shown determination to overcome their reading struggles. Dyslexia is not easy to live with and is a disorder that warrants correction and requires support.  Dyslexic individuals and their families need support and understanding, and the daily challenges of navigating a dyslexic child’s future must not be minimized. It is a disorder, not a super-power as some advocates may portray it.

As your dyslexic child grows older, you are probably wondering what lies ahead for your dyslexic child’s future, in their education and career opportunities.

Good news!

With increasing awareness, early intervention, and a growing emphasis on inclusive education, dyslexic-neurodivergent children are poised to thrive academically and professionally.

What the experts know with certainty

With parents’ love, understanding and support for the child’s learning difficulties—the experts agree—a dyslexic child can achieve extraordinary success in life.  (See the Open Door Blog post: Empowering Dyslexic Children)

Being a parent of a dyslexic child yourself, you probably already know that your child is exceptional. Chances are, your dyslexic child is very intelligent, creative, artistic, athletic, imaginative, musical, and mechanically-minded, in addition to being a good abstract thinker with excellent people skills.

As Dean Bragonier mentions in his TEDx Talk, The True Gifts of a Dyslexic Mind, dyslexic individuals are known to succeed in these four main areas: entrepreneurship, engineering, architecture, and the arts.

Renowned Vancouver-based educational psychologist and dyslexia author, Dr. Gavin Reid, often emphasizes the inherent strengths of neurodivergent individuals. As a father of a neurodivergent adult son, he frequently advocates for recognizing the unique talents of dyslexic learners.  “With early diagnosis, intervention, targeted support—dyslexic learners can achieve remarkable success.” For more about Dr. Gavin Reid visit, the Open Door blog: Dr. Gavin Reid Dyslexia: A Complete Guide.
