In Loving Memory of Marion May

by | Blog, The Open Door posts

This is a hard post to write, but it is also one of the most important.

Today, we honour our beloved Marion May.

And when I say beloved, I truly mean it.
We loved her.
Her students loved her.
And she loved them right back.

Why She Came to The Open Door

Marion applied to be a tutor with The Open Door nearly ten years ago. When asked why, her answer was simple and powerful. She wanted to help the students who were struggling the most.
She cared deeply about helping, about making a difference, and about reaching those who needed it most.

Below, I will share her Open Door bio. It gives just a glimpse of how multi-talented she was and how passionate she was about helping others.

A Tutor, a Writer, and a Creative

Marion was also a gifted writer. She also already had her own food blog, the delicious Barrhaven Bites, and she brought that same heartfelt voice to our own blog at The Open Door. Her posts were always warm, personal, and full of insight. Before long, she became our official blog writer.

Even when her health made it impossible to continue tutoring, she kept writing. It gave her a way to keep doing what she loved: writing, creating, helping, and staying connected to the community she cared about.

Who She Was and How We Remember Her

Marion was warm, quick-witted, and quietly hilarious.
She cracked me up with sideways comments and our many inside jokes.
She brought lightness, joy, and thoughtfulness to everything she did, from her beautiful December holiday blog posts that celebrated life, family, and reflection (often with a lovely recipe), to the sock puppet creations that showed her playful creativity.

More than anything, it was her mindset that deeply impressed me.
Even as she faced an incredibly difficult prognosis, she met each day with gratitude and grace. Her positivity, even in the hardest times, was a true testament to her spirit.

We all miss her so deeply.
We are so grateful that she came into our lives.
And we are truly privileged and blessed to have known her.
